There was no shortage of restaurants when Not Your Average Joe’s first opened in 1994. There was, however, a shortage of great restaurants with reasonable prices in the suburbs. Tired of driving too far and paying too much, Steve Silverstein decided to build the restaurant he was longing for. The name Not Your Average Joe’s came out of Steve’s determination to avoid the run-of-the-mill-restaurant rut. He wanted to create a unique neighborhood place, where people know your name, where the food and prices are great, where you feel special without dressing up. Seems other people want that too. Today, with 22 locations in the Boston area and a couple more near Washington DC, Not Your Average Joe’s is satisfying a seemingly limitless hunger for creative casual cuisine. No, the world doesn’t need another restaurant. But it could use a few more Not Your Average Joe’s. We’re working on it.

Macera's Soup and Sauce in Cranston definitely can hold its own against the Federal Hill heavyweights. David and Therese Macera take pride in treating their customers like famiglia. Hell, wrap a pretty blue ribbon around this unassuming gem and transplant it to the Hill and they could easily charge double. (Don't worry, the wine and beer list is also reasonably priced.) Hit the new takeout counter for a gallon of their famous marinara or homemade chicken escarole soup. Just be warned that this place is a madhouse on weekends -- and rightfully so. Grab the circular table in the back corner and let the garlic and olive oil aroma fill your head while you munch on fresh bread from Buono's Bakery and some heavenly calamari or any of their tasty appetizers. The dinner entrées are to die for: the chicken Marsala is a beautiful thing, the stuffed eggplant manicotti and gnocchi in a pink vodka sauce creative and delicious.
