It’s often said that, in order to move forward you have to look to the past. This can definitely be said about John Joe Somers who is drawing inspiration for his newest venture from the memories and stories of his Neighbor, Nelly O’Sullivan who was a stall holder in the Coal Quay Market in Cork City, Ireland.

A character and a story in herself, Nelly was a familiar face all her life in the marketplace. She was always ready with a quick response and a smart piece of wit. She got her name from the old shawl that she wore day in and day out, but never got sight of a washbasin. Her thinking on that being “Ah sure it’ll only get durty again!”.

In her day the Marketplace was the life line of any town or city and, of course the pub was the lifeline of the market, a place to take the weight off your feet with a quick glass of stout, or somewhere to meet and agree on a deal with a simple handshake.

And now the traditional Irish Marketplace Pub has come to Boston and it is aptly named after the lady of the shawl herself “Durty Nelly’s”. A two-story bar on Blackstone Street in the heart of Boston’s oldest surviving Market place “Haymarket” Durty Nelly’s will have on the first floor a comfortable, cozy little haven for both the traveler and the shopper alike. Overflowing with Irish charm and hospitality, this is just the place to take a break from a hectic day or spend the night with good friends passing away the hours in great conversation. A definite halting spot for lunch, Durty Nelly’s will be serving good hearty Irish fare including a full Irish Breakfast all Day.

On the second floor a surprise awaits in the form of a luxurious 18th Century dining room with some of the best views of the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The dinner Menu will not just include specials but will, in fact, change every evening. With it’s great Food, comfortable décor and cozy atmosphere, Durty Nelly’s will rapidly become the Emerald Gem of the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

The Union Oyster House is the oldest restaurant in Boston and the oldest restaurant in continuous service in the U.S. — the doors have always been open to diners since 1826. The toothpick was first used in the United States at the Union Oyster House. Enterprising Charles Forster of Maine first imported the picks from South America. To promote his new business he hired Harvard boys to dine at the Union Oyster House and ask for toothpicks. The Kennedy Clan has patronized the Union Oyster House for years. J.F.K. loved to feast in privacy in the upstairs dining room. His favorite booth "The Kennedy Booth" has since been dedicated in his memory. Since 1826, the Union Oyster House has known only three owners. Carrying on proud traditions in dining and service since 1970 have been Mr. Joseph A. Milano, Jr., and Ms. Mary Ann Milano Picardi.
