Venue Description

In 1817, the poet Thomas Moore, inspired by exotic stories European travelers were bringing back from the Orient, published Lala Rokh, a romance. The title character is a beautiful young princess whose name means “tulip cheeks,” a term of endearment still used in the Persian language today.
Her story is truly an enchanting one. Lala Rokh is betrothed to a prince in a distant kingdom, who sends a grand procession of palanquins and elephant-borne thrones to meet her and bring her back to him. During the journey, she is entertained each evening by the poet Feramorz, who recites a series of magical, fantastic tales. In spite of herself, she falls in love with the handsome young poet, and as they near the end of their travels, knowing they must soon part, she descends into a state of deep melancholy. Only then does Feramorz reveal himself to be the prince in disguise. Of course, they marry and live happily ever after.
In Moore’s epic, this classic love story, along with the traditional folk tales of Feramorz, are exactingly wrought in unforgettable verse. Here at Lala Rokh, we bring the same exacting care to the preparation and presentation of traditional Persian cuisine. Our aim is not just to fill the stomach, but to create a dining experience that satisfies the body, mind and soul.

Nestled on historic Beacon Hill, The Hungry I has often been called the most romantic restaurant in the city. With its French-influenced menu (changed seasonally by chef/owner Peter Ballarin) as well as its cozy, candlelit interior, three working fireplaces and lush outdoor patio for fair weather days, it is easy to see why. Chef/Owner Peter is a Seventh generation baker which gives the restaurants breads and pastries a unique flair, particularly the restaurants infamous walnut pie! The Hungry I also hosts small weddings, parties, or private affairs for 12-30 guests.
