  • Revolving Door Restaurant Newport

    .0m away

“So what type of restaurant is The Revolving Door?” The answer is this: It depends! The name of the restaurant is aptly chosen, however, as the Revolving Door’s unique mission is to provide a venue for revolving guest chefs and bartenders to showcase his or her culinary talent. The Thames Street brainchild of Chef Albert Bouchard and his wife Sarah introduces a new guest chef every two weeks to a month, keeping the restaurant’s identity constantly in flux with a rotating menu of cuisine. Located on the Newport Harbor, the restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. Its extensive drink menu includes 24 types of beer, separate wine, rum and single malt scotch menus and innovative cocktails overseen by award-winning bar manager, Jason Kindess. Bouchard, owner of the highly acclaimed French fine dining Bouchard Restaurant, located next door to The Revolving Door, offers chefs from around the world an opportunity to establish their brand. “We are looking for professional chefs who are in between jobs or off-season,” says Bouchard. The Revolving Door is a communal experience — one where visitors can interact with the chefs, courtesy of the open kitchen. “You can’t hide — you’re right in front of everyone,” says Bouchard, whose expectations for each chef are simple: quality and cleanliness. Guest chefs pay for their own ingredients and take 75 percent of sales each night they cook. Their small, personalized menus consist of three to four appetizers and three to four entrees, Bouchard says. The casual, three-floor, 45-seat bar/restaurant provides each new chef with wait staff, bartenders, host/hostess, prep cooks, and house chef Josh Berman. In addition to the varied menus new chefs will bring, house chef Berman maintains the quality of The Revolving Door’s two $24 pre-fixe dishes: steak frites and shrimp scampi with salad, which are served every day. True to the Revolving Door’s reputation for bringing cutting edge concepts of the culinary world to Newport, Bouchard also added a spectacle called “Battle Chefs”, where chefs cook/battle back to back, mano-a-mano in a timed event (like Food Network’s “Chopped”) in front of their customers as they attempt to prepare a better dish than their fellow competitor. The winner will receive the cover from the night’s event

  • Scales & Shells Newport

    .0m away

Scales & Shells is a seafood restaurant in every sense of the word. Our goal from "day one" has been to serve the freshest, highest quality seafood product to our guests. In order to achieve this, we have our own fish truck on the road daily. Our Fish buyer makes the rounds to locate what fish is available and whether or not it meets our standards. Many times we not only know when the fish was caught, but where and by whom. Our varied suppliers know what quality we expect and go out of their way to save the "top of the catch" for us. After making our purchases, we insure that the product is handled properly...iced, and cut to order. Upon entering the front door, the aromas will overwhelm your senses. The kitchen here is an open kitchen, and draws our customers into visually participating in the preparation of their dinner. Guests walk immediately up to the line to see "what's cooking". Everyone asks questions, talks to the chefs, and many even make their dinner choices right then and there. Our dishes are prepared in such a way as to enhance the fish not overpower it. An evening with us will not only give you a wonderful meal but an entertaining evening as well.

  • Cafe Zelda Newport

    .0m away

Considered to be one of the finest brick and brownstone buildings in the city of Newport, RI, 528 Thames Street has had a long history of entertaining both locals and visitors. Built in 1895, the building was originally constructed as a liquor store/brewery and a private function hall. Outside, the slanted roof was designed to collect water and bring it to the cistern in the basement of the building to help with the brewery operations. Proprietor Ernst Voigt started the long-standing tradition of treating his customers right, and would often give complimentary meals to his good clients at the restaurant. His brewery within the building made its rounds delivering Weiss Beer to Newport, Rhode Island residents on Clydesdale horses, on loan from the stables at the mansions on Bellevue Avenue. In the 1940's, McGee's Pub took over operations and ran the establishment as a local speakeasy and tavern until 1982. Then the building was purchased by Murray Davis, the founder of Cruising World Magazine in the 1980's. Davis named the establishment Cafe Zelda, after F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife and her influence in creating the roaring 20's lifestyle. In 1986, current owners Tom & Roxanne Callahan purchased the building and the business from Davis. Today they continue the 100-year-old tradition of serving quality seafood and steaks to restaurant customers in a lively and inviting atmosphere in the heart of downtown Newport, RI. Cafe Zelda is also the Storm Trysail Club Newport Station. We are proud to be active in our community and involved with such worthy causes as: Days of Taste, Leukemia Cup, Taste of Newport, YMCA Summer Camps, The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and countless golf tournaments.
