In 1893 the Mee family, proprietors of a bottling company fulfilling bourbon and Ales for New York distilleries set forth to expand their business going into retail. Building a four-story building containing a retail liquor store on the first floor, the second floor a home for family members who managed the store, and the third and fourth floors to accommodate immigrants coming into America for new opportunities. Business thrived until prohibition forcing closure and property changing hands until post-prohibition where the store turned into a bar by a local Irish politician calling it Uncle’s Café. The upper levels became rundown and the boarding rooms became a brothel. It wasn’t until a new entrepreneur Evo “Curly” Donnini & his wife Martha took over in 1962 with a vision to build a highend food & wine establishment using King Henry VIII Palace of Hampton Court for its Tudor style as its inspiration with a budget of over one-million dollars to rehab the building in its entirety, now receiving architectural design awards for its design.
Our restaurant in Woonsocket, RI hosts a train that circles the main dining room, benefiting research for Paget's Disease. This location also has a function room that seats up to 35 people. Bring the family on Tuesday for Kid's Night from 5-8PM!
We are very much the same family restaurant that our parents envisioned when they opened the doors to The Beef Barn in 1969 and we continue to embrace that approach forty-five years later. We're a home-grown operation, not only because we work the counters but because the walls around us are infused with history. The trademark silo came from our grandfather’s farm – hauled here on a flatbed truck. The chicken coop was built by our Uncle. The antiques inside - vintage hatboxes from McCarthy's, original signage from Cobble Rock - tell the story of local businesses from around North Smithfield and Woonsocket. The menu is almost identical to the original and though we’ve added a few poultry items, everything remains under five dollars and everything remains homemade. Our roast beef is cooked low and slow for eight hours, is sliced throughout the day and is as popular as the day we opened our doors. That’s why we go through a hundred pounds of it each and every day.
